What are your preferred prompts or tools to get your clients and friends to get unstuck from the template and find their riskier and more memorable POV?

I love to ask them what their competition is doing that they think is complete bullshit and really riles them up. I like to ask them when was the moment they left whatever cool thing they were doing before because they knew this was something that they couldn't NOT do — and what was the core idea in that moment that they couldn't shake.

I'd love to know what others ask too.

These are really great. I have some go to questions like "What do you believe that nobody else believes?" and "If your brand were to champion a movement around something bigger than your product, what kind of movement would it be and why?" Tbh, I think a lot client that I work with have a POV they feel but struggle to articulate. What I've learned is that treating POV development like a design exercise (exploring multiple directions before zeroing in on the winner) helps build conviction in that POV so they truly own it.

The point about articulation is salient. I've seen that over and over again. It's not unlike how many people have a difficult time understanding their own needs, and whether or not they are going unmet or are being met, and then the emotions that come from either of those realities. Somehow I see these as connected.

Couldn’t agree more. I like the follow up comments and would add sometimes I like to dig into some other vulnerable layers to get there. Like what’s the chip the founder has on their shoulder? How’d it develop? Why is it so important to you? What’s it felt like when you’ve been blocked or had failures as you’ve fought for the mission? Love this though.
