Walking away from freelance
Hi friends! Two months into my freelance journey and the momentum is building. Projects are rolling in, and I'm starting to find my groove.
When I initially left Twitter to go independent, I thought I'd freelance under my name — working directly with clients and partnering with other agencies as an independent contributor.
My thinking: Float between the most interesting projects and build my personal brand within each community.
What I didn’t account for was my desire to scale the kind of impact I’ve been making with more teams who are looking to build something that meaningfully stands out.
Sure freelance is great, but what if there’s a bigger opportunity to reach more people?
So I’m starting to explore building a new studio type of thing and what that might entail.
Tbh, not even sure if it will be called an agency, studio, or something else entirely — but your 18+ responses on Twitter have my gears churning.
Here’s what I do know: Over the last 15 years, I’ve mastered a process designed to help teams understand what makes them uniquely different & desirable; a formula to align their people, build momentum, & get to product-market fit faster.
This radically new approach to building something people talk about really works—so why not eat my own dog food, build a brand around it, & scale it to more teams?
Lean startup isn’t for everyone and I want to share a different kind of philosophy for anyone hungry for an alternative.
While there’s so much to figure out, I'll lean into these early guiding principles as I bring this new thing to life:
Don’t be everything to everyone
Optimize for long-term relationships over one-off projects
Showcase the “how” just as much as the “what”
Over the next few weeks I plan on “building in public,” giving you a behind the scenes look into positioning my new studio, naming it, and building it from the ground up.
If there’s anything specifically you’d like me to cover, hit that reply button. Excited to share more soon.
