Moving on from Twitter
Elan Miller
Today is my last day at Twitter.
And no, it’s not because of any of the Elon drama lol. I gave my notice 6 weeks ago and stayed to finish up a project I was particularly passionate about.
Before I announce what’s next, I want to quickly reflect on my last 15 months at the bird app.
I joined Twitter in February 2021 via the Ueno acquisition to help build a new strategy department.
Building a new team from the ground up was quite the experience, giving me a unique opportunity to work on a variety of things and see how multiple teams operated across a large company.
Some personal highlights included vision projects for key initiatives like DMs, Communities, & Misinformation — leading a XFN effort to develop a strategic POV for big bets across the company.
Working at Twitter reaffirmed my belief that a clear story is necessary for a distributed workforce to thrive. If everyone isn’t aligned on the “why” and “how” even the best execution won’t get you very far.
So in terms of what’s next, I’m starting my own thing — to help teams craft their narrative & put it at the heart of everything they do.
What has me so energized right now: Story is especially impactful in an ever-increasingly decentralizing world.
In crypto, communities are built on narratives & when the technology is open-source, brand is the differentiating moat.
Story is your operating system; it helps your community understand how to meaningfully contribute; and gets your team to product-market fit faster.
Simply put, story is the highest leverage thing a founding team can work on.
While I’ll be working for myself, I won’t be working alone.
There’s a hot emerging trend where the best talent is going independent to form “liquid super teams” formed by people with the right set of combined attributes for the task at hand.
As @PackyM of Not Boring puts it:
“Liquid Super Teams are like bubbles in a lava lamp. People float in and out, join forces when it makes sense to, bounce away when it doesn’t. Some bubbles are big and stick together for a few spins around the lamp, some are tiny and pop off to do their own thing for a while.”
I love this framing, and will be both spinning up and joining liquid super teams for the foreseeable future to have a greater impact than I could at any single company.
Sometimes that means recruiting specialized designers from my network to bring the strategy to life. Other situations require me to be the specialist, plugging into other entities like Vector DAO, Slope, or And Walsh to lead strategy for other super teams.
tl;dr If you’re looking to meaningfully differentiate your brand & bring it to life across the product experience—I’d love to chat.
Onwards & upwards…excited for the next chapter.
